How Many Rows of Hair Extensions Do I Really Need?

you’ve ever wondered how many rows of extensions you actually need, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common questions I get behind the chair — and one of the most misunderstood (even by stylists).

Here’s the thing: not all rows are created equal. And what looks seamless on one person can look totally off on another if the wrong number of rows are used. Let’s break it down.

1 Row: The Subtle Filler

Think of one row as your “hair filler.” It’s perfect for guests who love their current length but just want a little more fullness or maybe an extra inch or so of hair.

A single row blends right into your natural hair, filling in thin ends and creating that healthy, full look that still feels low-maintenance. It’s great for:

  • Fine hair that just needs density

  • Someone who needs something low maintenance

  • Or anyone who loves their length but wants their hair to feel thicker

❌What it’s not great for? Trying to add serious length. Why is that? That's when you start to get the dreaded extension mullet...

I see this all the time and i'm sure you've seen it too 👀 Someone is told they only need one row and they want to add length. The result?A wispy, disconnected look that doesn’t move naturally, what I call an extension mullet.

When there isn’t enough weight and coverage to connect your natural hair with the added hair, it ends up looking like two separate layers instead of one seamless flow. The hair doesn’t swing or style like it should, and you’ll be fighting it every day.

If your goal is length and volume, one row just won’t cut it.

This is where the real transformation happens, length and movement...

For most guests, two rows are the sweet spot. That’s where we can actually build length and fill in the shape for natural movement.

Two rows allow me to blend the extensions through your layers, making sure the ends are thick, full, and move like your real hair. Two rows is also what i like to call "a hair blanket," laying overtop your natural hair giving your natural hair a break from daily heat styling.

This is ideal for:

  • Guests wanting a longer transformation

  • Those who want to grow their natural hair out

  • Easy brush and go mornings

The Bottom Line

If your stylist says you only need one row but you’re showing inspo photos with a big transformation, ask questions. The number of rows matters more than most people realize.

Your extensions should move, blend, and behave like your own hair, and that takes the right foundation to make it happen.
