Natural Looking Wigs For Women: Yes, Your Wig Can Actually Look Like You Grew It

Whenever I talk about wigs, I know the first thought immediately goes to a $19.99 Amazon wig that comes in that shiny, airtight package. You know the ones...the shiny Barbie-feeling hair that sizzles the moment you try to change the style with your hot tools. 😂

That is one of the biggest concerns I hear guests say:

“I just don’t want to look like I’m wearing a wig.”

And that is our specialty.

She Just Wanted Hair That Felt Like Hers

This guest came to us at Texture + Sage Salon in Fremont, Ohio after hating her hair her entire life. She joked that she just never got her “adult hair.” It was always feathery fine, and she never had the fullness she wanted.

She had tried to make toppers and other hair loss solutions work, but she was finally ready for something more secure. She was also concerned that the clips used to secure her toppers could cause damage to the fine hair she already had, and protecting that hair was really important to her.

Most importantly, she wanted something that looked natural.

She didn’t want a ton of hair or something that suddenly looked completely different from the person she saw in the mirror every day. She wanted a natural-looking wig with believable density that still felt like her.

Creating a Natural-Looking Wig That Looked Like She Grew It

We started with a wig fitting appointment where I took her measurements, and she showed me photos of haircuts she liked as well as her color inspiration.

One thing she specifically mentioned was that she didn’t want a ton of hair. She wanted something believable.

And this is something I think is so important when we're talking about natural-looking wigs for women. More hair doesn't always equal better hair. Choosing the right density, length, color, cap construction and fit for the person wearing it is a huge part of what keeps a wig from looking “wiggy.”

From there, we took all of her information and sent it to our manufacturer, and the process of creating her piece began.

The Customization Makes the Difference

Six weeks later, her piece came in, and I went in and further customized it by adding depth to the root.

Something I did intentionally with this piece was have it come to me blonde instead of having the knots bleached. I then added the depth and dimension myself with a root and lowlights. This allowed me to create the dimensional color we wanted while keeping the integrity of those knots intact, rather than putting them through an additional bleaching process that could contribute to shedding over time.

These are the little details you might never notice when looking at the finished result and that's kind of the point.

When you're looking for wigs that look real, it isn't necessarily one big thing that makes the difference. It's all of these little details working together: the density, hairline, color, fit, cut and styling.

From there, we customized the cut into the cutest little bob for her. Instead of trying to make her fit the wig, we were making the wig fit her.

Taking Her New Hair Home

Once she came in for her final installation appointment, we further detailed the cut and taught her how to install it herself so she could confidently wear it at home without any hiccups.

We went over how to care for her new hair, how to style and maintain it, and sent her home with the products she needed to help protect her investment and get as much longevity out of her piece as possible.

Because I don't want my guests to leave the salon loving their hair and then get home the next morning thinking, Okay...now what do I do with this thing? 😂

I want you to actually feel confident wearing your hair in real life.

The moment we put it on, she cried happy tears.

She looked at herself and said:

“For the first time in my life, I finally don’t hate my hair.”

And THAT is why I do what I do.

Yes, I love creating natural-looking wigs with realistic hairlines, believable density and dimensional color. I love when someone sees one of our finished pieces and says, “Wait...that's a wig?!”

But this is about so much more than making a wig look natural.

For someone who has spent years—or even most of her life—feeling like her hair was something she had to fight with, hide or feel insecure about, getting to look in the mirror and actually love her hair is huge.
