If you’ve ever thought about getting extensions but worried they might be too much to keep up with, you’re not alone. One of the most common questions I get in the salon is, “Are extensions high maintenance?” And honestly? The answer might surprise you.

It’s not as complicated as you think

Extensions don’t have to take over your life. When they’re installed correctly and cared for properly, they can actually make your routine easier. Most of my guests tell me they spend less time doing their hair once they get extensions because their style holds longer, they can stretch their wash days, and their hair finally does what they want it to. They are able to wake up, brush and go!

The biggest shift is your wash routine

You’ll still shampoo, condition, and style just like before, you’ll just be a little more mindful. Brushing morning and night, blow drying the attachment area after washing, and using salon-quality products (I’m obsessed with Davines) are key. These steps protect your natural hair and keep your extensions looking fresh between move-ups. Many of my guests find they have to wash their hair LESS than they use to! The every day washers end up going every 3 days, the every 3 day washers end up going 5. When you're in a hurry you can even do a mini wash just in your crown area to extend your look in just 10 mins!

Maintenance appointments — not constant upkeep

Your extensions will need to be moved up every 6–8 weeks (most go 8) depending on your hair type, growth, and lifestyle. Think of it like getting your nails or lashes done, a quick refresh to keep everything sitting where it should. I always check in on your hair health, make any color adjustments, and make sure your blend is seamless each visit.

Extensions can actually help your natural hair

When you follow proper care and come in regularly, extensions can protect your natural hair by reducing daily heat and styling damage. Many of my guests use extensions as a way to grow their hair out, and the results are amazing. My guests are always shocked at how long their natural hair gets!

So, are extensions high maintenance?

Not really. They just require consistency and care, the same way you’d treat any other investment in yourself. Most of my guests say it’s easier to get ready, faster to style, and so worth it when they realize how confident they feel every day.
